About DigiMed
DigiMed Bayern for the Medicine of the Future
P4 medicine (predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory) is one of the world's most promising developments for improved, holistic and efficient healthcare.
DigiMed Bayern's goal is to guide Bavaria with a flagship project into this medicine of the future.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide and also in Bavaria. The goal of the DigiMed Bayern project is to establish a predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory (P4) medicine – with a focus on atherosclerosis.
DigiMed Bayern Phase 1 (2018-2024)
Over the past six years (2018–2024, Phase 1), DigiMed Bayern has made a significant contribution to the development of advanced, data-driven cardiovascular care.
In DigiMed Bayern Phase 1, valuable insights into disease-relevant mechanisms were gained, and the groundwork was laid for the development of biomarkers and therapeutic approaches. In addition, a comprehensive dataset was generated that will remain an important resource for cardiovascular research for years to come.
Examples of achievements in DigiMed Bayern Phase 1:
Over 150,000 downloads of the HerzFit App, which DigiMed Bayern developed in collaboration with the German Heart Foundation. The app is designed for the digital monitoring and improvement of heart health. By the end of 2025, the number of downloads had already risen to over 200,000.
28,000 children were screened for elevated blood lipid levels associated with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) – a genetic condition associated with a high risk of early cardiovascular disease. Those affected receive early medical care. By the end of 2025, the number of children screened had risen to over 40,000.
Large volumes of high-quality clinical and molecular data, as well as health insurance data, were made available under controlled conditions.
With the launch of the DigiMed Bayern Secure Cloud in 2023, a unique IT infrastructure was created that enables the secure use of health data for AI-driven medical research and the further development of precision medicine.
Building on these successes, an extension of the project was approved in December 2024 (DigiMed Bayern Phase 2, press release (in German))
DigiMed Bayern Phase 2 (2025-2027)
With the approved extension of the DigiMed Bayern project (DigiMed Bayern Phase 2) through the end of November 2027, this successful flagship project for P4 medicine will be strategically continued.
The focus is on the scientific evaluation of results and the further development of the secure cloud infrastructure at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ). Key objectives include maintaining and ensuring (FAIR-compliant) non-exclusive/non-discriminatory access to the results generated to date, as well as the primary goal of integration into the Bavarian Health Cloud (BHC).
While the initial project phase achieved progress in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of atherosclerotic diseases and provided national impetus (e.g., through the “HerzFit App”), the extension now ensures the long-term operation of the IT infrastructure, the integration of use cases, and consortium collaboration under sustainable organizational conditions. The TUM University Hospital German Heart Center (DHM) and the LRZ remain central partners, with additional partners involved through use cases. BioM continues to handle coordination and communication strategy tasks.
The coming years will thus be dedicated in particular to the structural and regulatory preparations for the sustainable establishment of the DigiMed infrastructure.
