DigiMed Bayern Phase 2 (2025-2027)

With the approved extension of the DigiMed Bayern project (DigiMed Bayern Phase 2) through the end of November 2027, this successful flagship project for P4 medicine will be strategically continued.

The focus is on the scientific evaluation of results and the further development of the secure cloud infrastructure at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ). Key objectives include maintaining and ensuring (FAIR-compliant) non-exclusive/non-discriminatory access to the results generated to date, as well as the primary goal of integration into the Bavarian Health Cloud (BHC).

While the initial project phase achieved progress in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of atherosclerotic diseases and provided national impetus (e.g., through the “HerzFit App”), the extension now ensures the long-term operation of the IT infrastructure, the integration of use cases, and consortium collaboration under sustainable organizational conditions. The TUM University Hospital German Heart Center (DHM) and the LRZ remain central partners, with additional partners involved through use cases. BioM continues to handle coordination and communication strategy tasks.

The coming years will thus be dedicated in particular to the structural and regulatory preparations for the sustainable establishment of the DigiMed infrastructure.

Work Package 1 (Phase 2)

Work Package 1: Research Upgrade and Operations

Lead: Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ)

Objective

Work Package 1 (WP 1) focuses on the continuous development and secure operation of the DigiMed Bayern Secure Cloud. The goal is to provide and further expand a high-performance, secure, and sustainable IT infrastructure for medical research. This will ensure long-term access to valuable research data for the DigiMed Bayern Consortium and lay the foundation for innovative analyses.

Significance for DigiMed Bayern

WP 1 is the technical backbone of the project and ensures that the DigiMed Bayern Secure Cloud will continue to be available as a secure, high-performance, and collaborative platform for medical research. The measures in WP 1 make it possible to meet current and future research requirements and ensure interoperability with national and international initiatives.

Work Package 2 (Phase 2)

Work Package 2: Integration and Coordination of Use Cases and Users

Lead: TUM University Hospital German Heart Center (DHM)

Objective

Work Package 2 (WP 2) focuses on the integration and coordination of scientific use cases and users within the DigiMed Bayern consortium. The DHM serves as the central interface between the scientific partners and the technical infrastructure of the Secure Cloud.

Significance for DigiMed Bayern

WP 2 serves as the organizational link between research and technology. It ensures that the diverse scientific projects can be carried out efficiently, securely, and in compliance with data protection regulations on the DigiMed Bayern Secure Cloud. Through close coordination and integration of use cases, maximum scientific and societal benefits are derived from the available data and resources.

Work Package 3 (Phase 2)

Work Package 3: Administrative Project Coordination, Project Management, Communication

Lead: BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH

Objectives

Work Package 3 (WP 3) provides the administrative and organizational foundation for the entire project. BioM is responsible for the central coordination of the consortium, overall project management, and internal and external communication.

Significance for DigiMed Bayern

WP 3 is the organizational backbone of the project. It ensures that all activities proceed efficiently, transparently, and purposefully, and that communication among all stakeholders and with the public runs smoothly. This ensures the sustainable impact and visibility of DigiMed Bayern.
